On Wednesday, May 7th, Sakita Covington was babysitting 4 children in her Newark, NJ apartment. The four children ranged in age from one to four years old. According to reports, Covington left the apartment while caring for the children to pick up one of her children from school. Unfortunately, during that time, one of the children, Naira Bennet, 4 years old, was playing near a folding bed when the folding mechanism snapped and shut around Naira’s head and neck. Bennett was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Originally, bail was set at $50,000 for Covington after being charged with child endangerment and aggravated assault. However, after attending video court, Judge Marilyn Williams found that Covington was a “danger to the community” and raised her bail to $500,000.
